Lake Toba is the largest volcanic lake in the world, with the height of the lake’s surface reaching 900m above sea level.
 
Lake Toba was formed from 3 supervolcano eruptions. The first eruption 800,000 years ago formed Parapat and Porsea in the South of Lake Toba. The second eruption 500,000 years ago formed Silalahi and Haranggaol in the North of Lake Toba, and the third eruption 74,000 years ago caused a decline in human, animal and plant population and global climate change which was followed by the appointment of Samosir Island (33,000 years ago), and the emergence of the Island Sibandang, Gunung Pusuk Buhit, Bukit Sipisopiso, and geothermal sightings such as Aek Rangat (Pangururan) and Batu Pintu (Simbolon-Palipi).
 
Lake Toba is a world-class geopark-based tourism destination that offers a diversity of natural, cultural and historical based attractions. The Indonesian government establishes Lake Toba as one of the Super Priority Tourism Destinations.
